THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Edinboro leads 5-1

Edinboro has won the last three meetings against Seton Hill, scoring 167 points in those three games. The Fighting Scots won the first two meetings with Seton Hill, both at Sox Harrison Stadium, before the Griffins picked up their first win in the series in 2015 in Edinboro's first trip to Offutt Field. Seton Hill claimed its lone win in the series in 2015, a 44-23 decision in Greensburg, Pa. The series has featured the winning team scoring at least 40 points in five of the six meetings.

LAST YEAR'S GAME
Edinboro 56, Seton Hill 12
Edinboro spotted Seton Hill a 12-7 lead then ran off the final 49 points behind record-setting performances by Walter Fletcher and James Clark. Seton Hill would score on its first two possessions, sandwiching a nine-yard TD run by Fletcher. The Edinboro defense settled in after that, and would end up limiting the Griffins to just 39 yards rushing and 290 total yards, with the Fighting Scots recording four sacks. Meanwhile, for the second year in a row the offense put up huge numbers against Seton Hill. Edinboro would end up scoring 14 points in each quarter while finishing with 436 yards rushing, the third-highest single-game total, and 619 yards, which ranks fifth. Fletcher spearheaded that effort, as he ran for a school-record 328 yards on just 21 carries, breaking Gerald Thompson's record of 316 yards. The junior running back scored four touchdowns. He went over 1,000-yards rushing for the second straight year. Clark gave Edinboro a 14-12 lead on an eight-yard scoring pass from Jarrod Kellar. Later in the game, Clark would break Darren Massey's career receptions record with his fifth catch, giving him 195 career receptions. Blake Reddick pushed the lead to 21-12 lead , catching a 21-yard TD pass from Kellar. The lead grew to 28-12 at the half when Kahlil Jackson scooped up a fumbled punt snap at the one to score. Fletcher took over from there, scoring the next three touchdowns on runs of 76, 19, and 3 yards. His backup, Kyle Galyk, wrapped up the scoring with another long run, going 68 yards early in the fourth quarter.  He would finish with his fourth career 100-yard game, finishing with 112 yards on 11 carries.  Kellar, in his second start, completed 14-of-26 passes for 183 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Gregory caught 5 passes for 72 yards. The defense, meanwhile, showcased Ethan Upperco. The senior defensive end posted a career-high 10 tackles while matching career-bests with 3 TFL and 2 sacks.

LAST WEEK
#9 Slippery Rock 41, Edinboro 30

Edinboro went toe-to-toe with ninth-ranked Slippery Rock before finally succumbing to one of the top offenses in Division II. The Fighting Scots trailed just 27-23 after three quarters, but The Rock would score a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to finally subdue the upset-minded Fighting Scots. Edinboro scored a season-high 30 points, and actually held an SRU attack that ranked second in Division II in scoring (51.7 ppg.) to a season-low 41 points. The day belonged to wide receiver Ta'Nauz Gregory and quarterback Levi Becker. Gregory caught 11 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown, in the process setting the school record for career receptions, now at 214. He added 111 yards on kickoff returns. Becker, who began the year as the third string quarterback, made his first career start and threw for 207 yards and 2 TDs. He threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kahlil Jackson, the first career touchdown reception for Jackson, and a seven-yarder to Gregory. However, the Fighting Scots could not contain Roland Rivers, who finished with 415 yards in total offense (391 yards passing, 24 yards receiving).  Vicente Arriagada continued his outstanding season as Edinboro's placekicker, drilling three field goals, covering 23, 34, and 44 yards.

Seton Hill 30, Mercyhurst 20
Seton Hill overcame a 20-13 halftime deficit to make it a sweep of the PSAC's Erie teams with a 30-20 win at Mercyhurst.  Trailing 20-10 late in the first half, the Griffins began their comeback with the second of Hunter Miller's three field goals to make it 20-13 at the half. Miller added a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Seton Hill scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.  The Griffins took their first lead of the game thanks to 16-play, 93-yard drive that ate up 7 minutes, 22 seconds. Ryan Barabe capped the drive with a one-yard sneak.   Mercyhurst would drive down to the SHU 19 yard line, but Fradan Allen intercepted a pass in the end zone with 2:24 to play, preserving the three-point lead.  Michael Valentino gave the Griffins some breathing room as he took a screen pass and went 78 yards for a touchdown.  Barabe completed 28-of-38 passes for 348 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Kinan Humphrey had seven catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.  Allen paced the defense with 12 tackles while adding 2 interceptions and one forced fumble.

THE COACHES
Wayne Bradford (Salisbury St. '90) was named Edinboro's 15th head coach on March 29, 2017 and led Edinboro to a 7-4 record in his first season. That was followed by a 6-5 finish a year ago, giving Bradford a 14-15 record in his third season. The 13 wins after two seasons are tied for the most by an Edinboro head coach in his first two seasons. After serving as interim head coach in 2017, that tag was removed less than a week after the conclusion of the season. With his tenth win as head coach coming against East Stroudsburg last year, Bradford is the fastest coach to reach 10 wins at Edinboro. Bradford has worked under four different head coaches and was an assistant at Edinboro for 18 years before taking over as the interim head coach. He has spent a majority of his time as the Fighting Scots' defensive coordinator, although in 2019 he will move over to the offensive side to oversee the offense. Bradford has master-minded some brilliant defensive performances over the years in a day and age when offense has taken over. For instance, in 2011 the Fighting Scots ranked eighth in Division II in scoring defense (17.0 ppg.), 11th in pass efficiency defense, and 18th in total defense (292.6 ypg.). Edinboro gave up fewer than 20 points in seven of its 11 games. Two years ago, his Edinboro defense finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II?in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks. Edinboro finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-2 record, marking the fifth time an Edinboro team with Bradford on the staff tied the school record for victories (9). Three of Edinboro's teams during his tenure have reached the NCAA playoffs, including the 2009 team, which finished at 9-4 and reached the Super Region One semifinals. All told, he has been a part of 118 wins.

Daniel Day (Seton Hill '09) is in his first season as the head coach at his alma mater. He was a member of the school's first football team in 2005, and as a senior in 2008 helped the Griffins to their lone trip to the NCAA?Playoffs, finishing with a 10-3 record. He was a three-year starter at Seton Hill, helping the Griffins advance to the second round of the NCAA Playoffs.  He was also named the team's Most Valuable Lineman following his senior season.  Day then spent two seasons on the Griffins staff as the offensive graduate assistant coach.  He served as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph's(Ind.) before being named head coach in 2014.  At that point, he was the youngest head coach in Division II football.  He was the school's head coach for two seasons before the school closed after the 2016 football season.  Day helped lead the Pumas to back-to-back eight-win seasons for the second time in school history. In 2017, he served as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Benedictine University.  The offense produced the highest yardage output in school history under his leadership.

THE GAME STORIES
  • Despite turning in one of its better efforts of the season, Edinboro fell to 1-6 with a 41-30 loss to ninth-ranked Slippery Rock. The Fighting Scots scored a season-high 30 points and held The Rock to a season-low 41 points, ten points below their season average. In fact, SRU came in ranked second in Division II in scoring offense. Edinboro trailed just 27-23 heading into the fourth quarter but could not complete the upset bid.
  • Edinboro's 2019 campaign has been about injuries and tough opponents. The Fighting Scots come in with a 1-6 record and are 1-3 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill is riding a two-game winning streak after rallying for a 30-20 win at Mercyhurst to complete the sweep of the two Erie teams. The Griffins defeated Gannon 25-21 a week earlier. Now they look to claim victories over all three Erie county teams in a span of three weeks. Seton Hill is 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC?West. The Griffins last two-game winning streak came in 2016, and they have not won three games in a row since the first three games of 2016.
  • Edinboro's first seven opponents have a combined record of 30-19, but take away Bloomsburg (2-5) and Gannon (2-5), and the other five opponents are 26-9. Slippery Rock is undefeated at 7-0 and ranked ninth in the latest AFCA?Division II?Top 25, while Grand Valley State is 6-1 and ranked 17th.  Cal U and East Stroudsburg are both 5-2. Still waiting for the Fighting Scots are 19th-ranked IUP (6-1), and possibly 17th-ranked Kutztown (7-0) in the coming weeks.
  • Edinboro picked up its lone win three weeks ago,  as the Fighting Scots rallied from a 17-8 deficit to defeat Gannon 18-17. The winning points came on a 35-yard field goal by redshirt freshman Vicente Arriagada as time expired.
  • Injuries have been another factor in Edinboro's slow start. No fewer than eight different starters have missed games due to injuries. Most notable, starting quarterback Andrew Tomko has played in just three games and has missed the last three contests. His backup, Jordan Castelli, has started three games, but was lost in the first half two weeks ago. Third-string quarterback Levi Becker saw his first extended action against Mercyhurst, and made his first start vs. Slippery Rock. The Fighting Scots have also been without starting cornerback DeAndre' Dowdell the last three games. Two other starters went down last week and could be out this week.
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory is wrapping up an outstanding career while leaving his name etched in the record books. The senior wide receiver now holds school records for career receptions (214) and career kickoff return yards (1,998). He stands second in career receiving yards (2,941), career receiving TDs (32), and career all-purpose yards (5,328). He needs 124 yards receiving to break that record, and is 3 TD receptions shy of the career touchdown receptions standard.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC?West Coaches Preseason Poll after finishing fourth in the division a year ago with a 3-4 ledger. Seton Hill was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC?West after going 1-10 a year ago.
  • Brandon Anderson and Vicente Arriagada were accorded PSAC?honors for their play against Gannon. Anderson was named the PSAC?West Defensive Athlete of the Week, while Arriagada was selected the Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
  • Anderson is looking to become the first player since 1999 to lead Edinboro in tackles three straight years. The redshirt senior strong safety has a team-leading 68 tackles, and is poised to move into the top ten in career tackles. He has 321, which is eight shy of tenth place.
