MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro will wrestle at "home" for the first time on Friday, November 8, "hosting" Wisconsin. The Badgers are ranked in the top ten in virtually every preseason poll.  They are sixth in the NWCA Division I Preseason Rankings.  The match will take place at Saegertown High School, and has already been sold out. Edinboro's lineup will have three former Panthers in the lineup, with Tyler Vath opening at 149 lbs., Cody Mulligan at 184 lbs., and Dylan Reynolds at 197 lbs. The Crawford County touch continues with true freshman Tye Varndell of Cambridge Springs High School earning the starting nod at 133 lbs.
  • The Edinboro wrestling team opened the 2019-20 campaign with three duals while competing in the Kent State Duals last weekend. The day got underway with a 29-6 win over host Kent State in the first-ever Mid-American Conference dual for the Fighting Scots. Edinboro then posted a 52-0 shutout of Mercyhurst North East. The Scots wrapping up the day against Ashland, a top Division II program, winning 36-3. That represented one more win than the two wins Edinboro had in 2018-19.
  • Earlier this year the Mid-American Conference announced the addition of the seven Eastern Wrestling League members, including Edinboro, as affiliate members. The move brings the MAC to 15 teams, the second-largest wrestling conference in Division I.
  • Head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, is in his second season in charge at his alma mater. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Kent State under Jim Andrassy. Hill faced a major rebuilding project a year ago after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill's first edition finished 2-9 in duals and placed fourth at the EWL Championships. All 10 starters return from a year ago, but the anticipated lineup will feature several changes. That includes Zach Ancewiczthe starter at 184 lbs. the last two years, who is expected to redshirt this season.
  • The MAC released its coaches' preseason poll earlier this week. In the team rankings, Edinboro is ranked ninth among the 15 teams. Missouri is the MAC preseason favorite. The Tigers won their seventh straight MAC Championship. Old Dominion was picked second, with a pair of former EWL teams, Lock Haven and Rider, ranked third and fourth, respectively. Central Michigan completes the top five.
  • Six individuals were ranked at each weight class, with three Fighting Scots appearing in the individual rankings. Dylan Reynolds is the highest-ranked Fighting Scot, coming in third at 197 lbs. In fact, he is behind two other former EWL wrestlers. Ethan Laird of Rider is ranked first at 197 lbs. and Clarion's Greg Bulsak is second. The redshirt senior enjoyed a breakout season in 2018-19, finishing with a 32-12 record after winning 24 matches his previous two years. He finished third at the EWL Championships. Jacob Oliver and Jon Spaulding are ranked fourth at 174 and 285 lbs., respectively. Oliver was Edinboro's lone NCAA qualifier a year ago. As a redshirt freshman, he finished with a 28-7 record, including 10-1 in dual matches. Oliver placed second at the EWL Championships after previously placing first at the PSAC Championships. Spaulding took over as the starter at heavyweight a year ago. The junior posted a 22-14 record with four falls. He placed third at the EWL Championships.
  • Reynolds and Oliver are also Edinboro's lone ranked wrestlers in the various national polls. Oliver is ranked 23rd by FloWrestling at 174 lbs., while Reynolds is ranked 25th at 197 lbs.
  • Hill welcomed a pair of new assistants to his staff this year. Former Fighting Scot heavyweight Ernest James returned early in the summer. James competed for the Fighting Scots from 2009-14. He was a three-time national qualifier who finished with a 100-49 career record. Sean Boyle joined Hill's staff at the beginning of October. The former 125-pounder at Michigan and Tennessee-Chattanooga, he previously served as an assistant coach at the University at Buffalo in 2018-19. The Bulls went on to finish second at the MAC Championships, with five wrestlers qualifying for the NCAA Division I National Championships, and two winning MAC titles. Prior to joining the UB staff, Boyle spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at Cal State Bakersfield from 2016 to 2018. Boyle wrestled at the University of Michigan from 2009-14. He was a two-time NCAA Division I qualifier and a two-time Big 10 place winner. He finished with an 89-53 record as a Wolverine. After being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, Boyle enjoyed an outstanding season at Tennessee-Chattanooga. He would be named the SoCon Wrestler of the Year and won the league title at 125 lbs. He finished with a 32-7 record while making a third trip to Nationals. His combined collegiate wrestling record was 121-60.
  • Kent State finished with a 7-15 record a year ago, including a 26-12 win over Edinboro. The Golden Flashes lineup showcases Andrew McNally at 174 lbs. The junior was 33-9 a year ago and finished second at the MAC Championships to qualify for the NCAA Division I National Championships. McNally is ranked third at 174 lbs. in the MAC preseason rankings. In addition, Tim Rooney is ranked third at 133 lbs. The redshirt senior was an NCAA qualifier thanks to a third place finish at the MAC Championships. He had a 24-15 record.
  • The 2020 MAC Wrestling Championships will be held March 7-8 and hosted by Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill.
PANTHER PRIDE
  • Friday's match at Saegertown High School provides three former Saegertown High School wrestlers a chance to compete in front of their fans once again. The trio of Tyler Vath (149 lbs.), Cody Mulligan (184 lbs.), and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) comprise almost a third of Edinboro's starting lineup, and will be key components in the team's success this year. Reynolds, a redshirt senior, is currently ranked 25th by FloWrestling at 197 lbs. and enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2018-19. He finished with a 32-12 record after winning 24 matches his first two seasons. Vath, a redshirt senior, has had an injury-filled career to date after originally joining the Fighting Scots in 2015-16. He returned to the lineup last January, picking up his first win since November 2016, and finished with an 8-8 record. Mulligan is a highly-regarded redshirt freshman who was a two-time PIAA state champion and three-time place-winner for Saegertown while competing for his father, Jim Mulligan. Mulligan holds the school record with 168 wins, one more than Reynolds and Vath.
WELCOME BACK HONORARY CAPTAINS MATT AND JARROD KING
  • Former Fighting Scot standouts Matt and Jarrod King will serve as honorary captains for the Wisconsin match. Matt King was inducted into the Edinboro Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. He was a two-time All-American at 165 lbs. who finished with a 132-23 career record. Jarrod King wrestled his final three seasons at Edinboro after transferring from Oklahoma. He would become Edinboro's fourth Division I national champion as a senior in 2010 and finishing third in 2009, both at 165 lbs. He finished with a 103-16 record.
