Fighting Scots Look to Even Season Series with Hot Gannon Squad

THE GAME STORIES   
  • Just eight regular season games remain as Edinboro begins second half action in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots host local rival Gannon with both teams riding winning streaks. Edinboro had a bye on Saturday and returns to the court for the first time since beating Mercyhurst last Wednesday, 78-61. That extended Edinboro's winning streak to four games and seven in the last eight games. The Fighting Scots are now 11-7 overall and 9-5 in the PSAC West, sitting in third place, a half-game ahead of Cal U. Gannon, meanwhile, has run off six straight wins and is now 17-4 overall and 13-2 in PSAC play. The Lady Knights have already clinched a PSAC Tournament berth along with Indiana(Pa.) in the Western Division. Gannon claimed the first meeting between the two on January 3 at the Hammermill Center, 72-53.
  • This will be the second of two EUknighted 2020 games as Edinboro and Gannon collaborate to benefit the Pa. Soldiers' & Sailors' Home. The festivities include a Hoopy Hour from 4-7 p.m. at The Edinboro Hotel, with proceeds benefiting the Pa. Soldiers' & Sailors' Home. For more details, click HERE          
  • Michaela Barnes was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week for the second straight week and the fourth time this year on Monday. She broke her own school record with 43 points in last Wednesday's win at Mercyhurst. Barnes and Rana Elhusseini combined for an incredible performance at Mercyhurst. Elhusseini fell two points shy of her career high with 24 points as the backcourt tandem accounted for 67 of Edinboro's 78 points. At one point from midway through the first quarter to midway through the third, the two combined for 37 straight points.              
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. They are averaging 75.1 ppg., good for second in the PSAC, while allowing 65.4 ppg., which ranks eighth. Gannon relies on a strong defense, as rhe Lady Knights are allowing just 62.1 ppg., which ranks third in the PSAC. Gannon is ninth in scoring at 68.8 ppg.  The Lady Knights were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll.
  • Michaela Barnes ranks second in the PSAC and third in Division II in scoring at 24.6 ppg. The 5'5" senior has scored 30-or-more points six times this season and nine times in her career, along with 20-or-more points 11 times. Just prior to halftime last Wednesday, Barnes became the fourth player in Edinboro history to reach 1,700 career points, and she currently stands at 1,724 points. He 43-point effort at Mercyhurst is the highest this season in the PSAC and the sixth-highest in Division II. She adds 5.1 rpg., ranks second on the team with 54 assists, and has made 112-of-137 free throws (81.9 pct.). In addition, she has made 22-of-60 3-pointers. The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Bridgette Shaffer stands second on the tyeam in scoring and rebounding at 13.9 ppg. and 6.7 rpg. She has made 60-of-138 3-pointers, ranking first in the PSAC 3-pointers made per game (3.3) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (43.5 pct.). A year ago, she made 49-of-118 3-pointers. The 5'10" graduate student posted a career-high 25 points against Indiana(Pa.) recently, making seven 3-pointers. She has made at least one 3-pointer in every game this year and 20 straight games dating back to last year.
  • Cheniya Sharpe has had five double-doubles in the last seven games. The 5'11" redshirt senior is averaging 7.4 ppg. and 9.1 rpg. She is second in the conference in rebounding. Over the last seven games, she is averaging 11.1 ppg. and 11.6 rpg. She is shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. Sharpe sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury. She has been named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week twice.
  • Rana Elhusseini has started the last 14 games at point guard. The 5'3" freshman had the best game off her career vs. Seton Hill, scoring 26 points while making 5-of-7 3-pointers. She comes off a 24-point effort at Mercyhurst, making 7-of-12 field goals and 10-of-11 free throws. Elhusseini is averaging 8.9 ppg. with a team-high 61 assists. She has made 18-of-58 3-pointers.
  • Madison Amalia, a junior, started the first four games at point guard, but missed the next five games with an injury. She is averaging 6.5 ppg. and has made 19-of-68 3-pointers. 
  • Monica Brown has started the last 15 games and plays a key role defensively. The 5'8" sophomore spearheaded a pressing defense against Indiana(Pa.) that keyed Edinboro's comeback, forcing IUP into turnover after turnover. The Crimson Hawks finished the night with 25 turnovers, with Brown registering four steals. She is averaging 4.9 ppg. and has a team-high 36 steals.
  • Bella Burrelli, a standout on the volleyball team, did not join the basketball team until after the volleyball campaign ended. A 6'0" freshman, she contributes 4.7 ppg. and 3.8 rpg, in 14 contests.

THE LAST MEETING
January 3, 2020 – Gannon 72, Edinboro 53 at Erie, Pa.
After trailing by as many as 19 poiints in the first half, Edinboro rallied to within five points midway through the fourth quarter. But the Fighting Scots would not score over the final 5 minutes, 16 seconds. Michaela Barnes and Bridgett Shaffer led Edinboro with 18 points apiece. Shaffer made six 3-pointers in 12 attempts, while adding a team-high eight rebounds. Alexis Rodenbaugh came off the bench to finish with season-highs of nine points and six rebounds in 21 minutes. Freshman guard Rana Elhusseini hustled her way to seven points, eight rebounds and five assists. Gannon had four players in double digits, led by Tori Obenrader with 17 points. Haley Tewes added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, with Boston McKinney and Sam Piroski contributing 10 points apiece.
 
HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 31-16, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.   
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING GANNON
  • Gannon is under the direction of Cleve Wright, who is in his second stint with the Lady Knights. He coached Gannon from 2202-13 and has a record of 260-104 at Gannon, the school's all-time winningest coach. He spent the last six years at the Division I level, including four seasons as the head coach at Miami(Oh.). Gannon is riding a six-game winning streak and has won 12 of its last 13 games. Two starters returned from last year's 14-17 squad, led by Chelsea Rourke. A 5'10" senior, Rourke is averaging 11.9 ppg., had made 34-of-75 3-pointers while leading the team with 27 blocked shots and shooting 55.1 percent from the floor. Junior guard Sydney Mitchell is the other returning starter. She averages 6.3 ppg. with 77 assists. Gannon's leading scorer and rebounder is Tori Obenrader. A 5'11" sophomore who was the PSAC West Freshman of the Year last season, Obenrader is averaging 17.6 ppg. and 7.8 rpg. She has led the team in scoring 18 times and has been the top rebounder 16 times. She is fifth in the PSAC in rebounding. Haley Tewes, a 5'11" senior, is averaging 9.0 ppg. and 5.9 rpg. Boston McKinney, a 5'4" sophomores, leads Gannon in assists with 99. Wright has used the same starting lineup all 21 games.
