HAMPTON, Va. – In a battle of nationally-ranked squads, 16
th-ranked Edinboro handed 25
th-ranked Old Dominion a 21-12 defeat on Friday afternoon at the Virginia Duals to move into the semifinals against Virginia Tech. The Virginia Duals are taking place at the Hampton Coliseum. The win boosts Edinboro's record to 6-1 and is the Fighting Scots sixth straight win. Old Dominion fell to 4-3.
As in the day's first match, a 25-10 win over Army,
A.J. Schopp posted the lone fall in the match. After tenth-ranked Jerome Robinson handed
Kory Mines (12-10) a 6-0 defeat to open the match, Schopp registered his 12
th fall of the season at 133 lbs. while improving to 19-2. The sophomore pinned Scott Festejo at 4:27.
Edinboro would win the next two matches, as well, as its trio of sophomores continued to roll.
Mitchell Port, ranked fifth at 141 lbs., won a 7-3 decision over 17
th-ranked Chris Mecate. He is now 19-3 and one win shy of 50 for his career.
Dave Habat followed with a 3-2 decision over Alexander Richardson to improve to 18-5.
Old Dominion would close the gap to 12-6 when Johns Nicholson escaped
Michael DePalma's late takedown attempt and survived for a 6-4 decision. DePalma, a redshirt freshman, fell to 18-7.
Johnny Greisheimer returned to the lineup earlier in the day after missing the Buffalo dual with an injury. The junior would lose by decision, but he came back with a solid effort against the Monarch's Brett Miller at 165 lbs. Greisheimer won a 4-1 decision to boost his record to 12-7.
174 lbs., ODU's Billy Curling defeated
Patrick Jennings, 8-1, as the redshirt freshman fell to 10-15 with his eighth straight loss. The Monarchs would also prevail at 197 lbs., with Jacob Henderson handing
Warren Bosch (10-10) a 6-1 defeat.
In between at 184 lbs., Vince Pickett used a pair of takedowns and a reversal against Austin Coburn to win a 7-3 decision. Pickett is now 17-8.
Ernest James closed out the match with another tight decision. The junior is now 16-6 thanks to a 3-2 decision over Matt Tourdot. Tied at 1-1, he posted the wining takedown in the latter half of the third period, then narrowly avoided a late takedown attempt by Tourdot at the buzzer.
Edinboro, the third seed, will now face second-seeded Virginia Tech in the semifinals at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Hokies, ranked tenth, handed the Scots a 21-16 defeat earlier in the year.
