} Edinboro head coach
Tim Flynn is looking to see his young Fighting Scots squad step up as the regular season hits its final month. Three of Edinboro's final four duals come against ranked opponents, beginning with a match vs. 21st-ranked Kent State. Both teams are currently 8-4, with Edinboro 3-1 in Eastern Wrestling League action and Kent State 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Edinboro returns to the mat for the first time two weeks, last facing Cleveland State on January 26. The Golden Flashes have been busy, facing Eastern Michigan and Buffalo last weekend, and hosting Cleveland State on Friday night before heading to Edinboro. Edinboro is ranked 16th in the latest InterMat Tournament Strength rankings, with Kent State 21st. In addition, the Fighting Scots are 16th in the latest USA?Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll.
} You'll see plenty of pink when Edinboro and Kent State take the mat. Both teams will be outfitted in pink singlets, courtesy of Cradle Gear. Edinboro is holding its Fighting Scots, Fighting Cancer Weekend. Admission to the match is free, with donations taken at the door. In addition, Edinboro will sell its Fighting Scots, Fighting Cancer t-shirts on Sunday. All proceeds raised throughout the day will benefit the Grateful Patients, Grateful Hearts Research Institute for Cancer.
} Last month the Fighting Scots finished fourth at the Virginia Duals, defeating Army (25-10) and 25th-ranked Old Dominion (21-12) before losing to tenth-ranked Virginia Tech (23-10) and ninth-ranked Central Michigan (25-10). The loss to Virginia Tech snapped a six-match winning streak. Kent State took fifth place, also ddefeating Old Dominion, 27-6, and losing to Virginia Tech, 26-9.
} Edinboro owns a 3-2 advantage in the all-time Division I series with Kent State, but the Golden Flashes have won the last two meetings, including a 22-15 decision a year ago at Kent, OH.
} Edinboro ended 2012 with an 11th place showing at the Midlands Championships, which featured 14 teams that finished in the top 25 at last year's NCAA?Division I National Championships. A pair of Fighting Scots placed fifth, with
A.J. Schopp picking up a fifth place finish for the second straight year at 133 lbs. and
Mitchell Port also picking up a fifth place. Three other wrestlers fell a win shy of earning medals --
Dave Habat and
Michael DePalma at 149 lbs. and
Ernest James at heavyweight.
} Edinboro made it back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships in December, plus six in the last seven years. All ten Fighting Scots placed as Edinboro won its 15th overall PSAC?title. The Fighting Scots finished with 160.5 points to outdistance Clarion, who came in second with 140 points. Three wrestlers won their second straight individual titles --
A.J. Schopp (133 lbs.),
Mitchell Port (141 lbs.), and
Dave Habat (149 lbs.). Lock Haven finished fourth.
}The Fighting Scots showcase an extremely young lineup, with one true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen starting, plus four sophomores. Edinboro's lineup features four ranked wrestlers. Leading the way is
A.J. Schopp (133 lbs.), who is ranked third by InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News and has a 24-2 record with 15 falls.
Mitchell Port is not far behind, ranked fourth by Amateur Wrestling News and fifth by InterMat with a 24-3 record. Both reached the round of 12 at last year's NCAA?Division I?National Championships.
Dave Habat (21-7) is ranked 16th in both polls.
Ernest James (19-8) is ranked 19th by Amateur Wrestling News and 20th by InterMat.
}Following this weekend's action, Edinboro heads to Des Moines, Iowa to face second-ranked Iowa. The Hawkeyes handed top-ranked Penn State its first loss last weekend.
Scouting Kent State
} The Golden Flashes have a veteran lineup, with no fewer than five seniors and fifth-year seniors in the lineup. But the other half of the lineup is young, with four freshmen and redshirt freshmen. Coach Jim Andrassy's team already owns a win over one EWL?outfit, defeating Clarion, 29-10. In addition to the two common opponents in the Virginia Duals, Kent State lost to Central Michigan, 27-8, and defeated Buffalo, 22-19, leaving Edinboro and Kent with six common opponents. The Golden Flashes will make it a seventh on Friday night when they host Cleveland State. Kent State is led by fifth-year senior Dustin Kilgore. He is ranked number one at 197 lbs. with a perfect 32-0 record, and is right now the most dominant Division I wrestler, with 16 falls, three technical falls and seven major decision. Kilgore is capping an illustrious career. He is a three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American, winning the national championship at 197 lbs. in 2010-11. He finished seventh the year before. He is KSU's career wins leader with 140. He took and Olympic redshirt year in 2011-12 after finishing at third at the World Team Trials Casey Newburg is also nationally-ranked. The fifth-year senior competes at 184 lbs. and is ranked 15th by Amateur Wrestling News and 17th by InterMat with a 29-5 record. He was an NCAA qualifier a year ago. Three other regulars own 20 wins. Fifth-year senior Stevie Mitcheff is 22-10 at 125 lbs., redshirt freshman Sam Wheeler is 21-9 at 174 lbs., and freshman Mack McGuire is 20-14 at 133 lbs.
