The Game Story
  • On Monday, Edinboro rallied late in the fourth quarter to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 61-56. The win capped off a three-game homestand, leaving the Fighting Scots undefeated in 2018 at 3-0, and a 6-0 overall mark at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro improved to on the year 12-1 with the win, and 8-1 in the PSAC West this season. On Wednesday, the Fighting Scots will look to improve their winning streak to four games at local rival Gannon.
  • Last Week, Edinboro ranked 14th in the WBCA Division II Top 25 poll and 22nd in the D2SIDA Division II national rankings.
  • The Fighting Scots have had incredible success over the past seven seasons, with 20+ wins each year and a combined 177-47 record in that span. This season, Edinboro won its first nine games to start the year, which was the second-longest win streak to start a campaign since the 24-game winning streak to during the 2011-12 season.
  • Wednesday's contest at Gannon is Edinboro's first road matchup since suffering a back-and-forth 74-71 loss at #10 California(Pa.). The Lady Knights are in the midst of back-to-back home games, after a last second basket by Seton Hill propelled the Griffins to a 79-78 come from behind victory over the Lady Knights on Monday. Gannon is 7-7 on the year, and have gone 4-4 in the PSAC West.
  • Edinboro's contest marks the fourth of six straight contests in Erie County. Following the contest against the Lady Knights, the Scots return to McComb for their next two games against No. 3/2 Indiana(Pa.) and Clarion.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish third in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. A year ago, they finished fourth in the West at 21-9 and 16-6 in conference action, qualifying for the PSAC Tournament for the eighth straight season.
  • On December 2, head coach Stan Swank became the all-time winningest basketball coach in PSAC history, after his then 560th career victory over Mansfield, 81-54. In the win, he passed Charles Chronister of Bloomsburg for the most wins all-time by a men's basketball coach in the PSAC. In his 31 years at Edinboro, Swank has gone 566-302 overall, and entered the year ranked ninth among Division II coaches with 554 career wins.
  • Gannon was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC West Preseason Coaches' Poll. Last season, the Lady Knights finished seventh in the West at 9-19 overall and 9-13 in conference play. Last season, Gannon's streak of PSAC Tournament appearances ended at five. Lady Knight head coach Jim Brunelli had coached the team to three straight playoff appearances in his first three seasons at the helm.
  • Last season, Edinboro snapped a two-game skid at Hammermill Center. The Fighting Scots are 2-3 in their last five trips at Gannon.
  • Jontay Walton (18.8 ppg.), Michelle Jahn (13.8), Ciara Rosten (13.5), and Michaela Barnes (11.8) are each averaging double figures per contest this season. Combined, they are responsible for 57.9 points (71.3 percent) of the Scots 81.2 points they've averaged per game this year.

  • The Edinboro-Gannon game can be heard on WFSE-FM 88.9. Dakota Palmer will be handling the play-by-play with Madison Gross providing color commentary. In addition, this year Edinboro is part of the PSAC Network. All men's and women's home basketball games will be streamed live through Stretch Internet.

  • The Fighting Scots snapped a two-game losing skid at the Hammermill Center, and swept their local PSAC rival on the year, 69-40. The sweep was Edinboro's first since the 2015-16 season, when the Scots went 4-0 against Gannon during the campaign.
  • Edinboro jumped out to a 15-7 lead off a trio of 3-pointers from Michelle Jahn, Jontay Walton and Katie Fischer.
  • Following Fischer's basket at 2:14, the Lady Knights held Edinboro scoreless over the next eight minutes, knotting the game at 15 apiece. With 7:08 remaining in the opening half, the Fighting Scots ended the quarter on a 19-4 run and led 34-19 at halftime.
  • Edinboro carried its momentum into the third stanza, holding Gannon to eight points in the quarter. The Fighting Scots never trailed in the second half, leading by as much as 29 points on four occasions in the final quarter.
  • Gannon's 40-point showcase was a season-low, and was the second-fewest points Edinboro allowed during the campaign. The Fighting Scots entered the contest ranked fifth in the PSAC in scoring defense, allowing 59.3 ppg.
  • Fischer led all players with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting, and 3-of-5 3-pointers. The point guard also dished out seven assists and picked up four steals and four assists. Fischer also made 11 of Edinboro's 15 third quarter points. Jahn also scored in double figures with 10 points.
  • The Fighting Scots won the rebounding battle, 38-33, and controlled the offensive glass, 16-7. They entered the contest losing the battle of the boards in five of their previous six contests.
  • Edinboro forced the Lady Knights into 22 turnovers, which the Fighting Scots capitalized for 29 points off turnovers.
  • Lanise Saunders led Gannon with 12 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.
 
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Stan Swank (Purdue '76) -- 566-302, 31st Year
  • Stan Swank is in his 31st season as the Edinboro women's basketball head coach. He has led the Fighting Scots to seven straight 20-win seasons, and is currently 177-47 overall during that period. In total, Swank has had 13 20-win seasons as Edinboro's head coach.
  • Swank is the all-time leader in victories among PSAC men's and women's coaches with 566 wins. He entered the campaign with 554 wins, which was the most wins by a women's basketball coach in PSAC history. He then passed former Bloomsburg men's basketball coach Charles Chronister for the men's title in Edinboro's 81-54 triumph at Mansfield.
  • Entering the 2017-18 season, Swank ranked ninth in Division II with 554 wins at Edinboro, and 41st in the NCAA. As a program, Edinboro ranked 13th all-time in Division II with 779 wins. Over the last five years, he has coached the Scots to a .733 winning percentage, which is 25th in Division II. Swank also ranks 38th in Division II history with a .648 winning percentage.
  • In his 31 years at Edinboro, he has led the Fighting Scots to four PSAC championship titles, and ten appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament. During March Madness, the Fighting Scots have made two Elite Eight appearances, three Sweet Sixteen births, and have made the Round of 32 on four occasions.
 
Gannon: Jim Brunelli (Clarion '96) – 82-49 at Gannon, 5th Year; 164-115 overall, 10th Year
  • Brunelli has won more games during his first four seasons than any coach in program history.
  • Under Brunelli, Gannon has made the PSAC Tournament in his first three seasons at the helm, including a pair of NCAA Tournament berths.
  • Brunelli's 28-4 debut season is the best first-year performance by a Gannon women's basketball head coach in program history.
  • Prior to Gannon, Brunelli served as the head coach at Anderson for five seasons. The Trojans won three Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships and earned three NCAA Tournament bids during his tenure.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro concluded a three-game homestand on Monday, as the Scots rallied late in the fourth quarter for a 61-56 win over Pitt-Johnstown. The Fighting Scots improved to 6-0 at McComb Fieldhouse this season, after playing their third home game over a six day stretch. Over the past week, Edinboro also defeated Kutztown (86-65) this past Saturday and Seton Hill (90-70) last Wednesday.
  • The Fighting Scots head to Gannon at 12-1 overall and hold an 8-1 mark in the PSAC West. Their lone loss of the year came by three points at No. 10 California(Pa.) on December 30, 74-71. Wednesday's contest against the Lady Knights marks Edinboro's first road game of the New Year. The Fighting Scots don't travel far over the next nine days, as they'll remain in Erie County, with home matchups vs. No. 3/2 Indiana(Pa.) and Clarion starting Saturday at McComb Fieldhouse.
  • A year ago, Edinboro went 21-9 overall and 16-6 in conference play, finishing third in the PSAC standings. This year, the Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They currently sit in third place, behind California(Pa.) and Indiana(Pa.), who remain undefeated in PSAC action.
  • In the most recent Top 25 national rankings, Edinboro was ranked 14th in the WBCA Division II Top 25 and 22nd in the D2SIDA rankings.
  • Edinboro leads the PSAC in scoring, and rank 14th in Division II with 81.2 ppg. The Fighting Scots are holding opponents to 61.2 ppg., ranking fourth in the conference. They also lead the conference in rebounds per game (43.7) and defensive rebounds per contest (29.0).
  • The Scots have held opponents to under 80 points in each contest this season, while Edinboro has scored 80 or more points in all but three games during this campaign.
  • In the win over Pitt-Johnstown, the Fighting Scots struggled against the length of the Mountain Cat front court. Junior Allison Thompson sat out of the contest due to injury, and junior Cheniya Sharpe left in the first quarter of the contest with an injury. After trailing 54-51 with 3:15 left in the contest, Michaela Barnes connected on a 3-pointer and scored a layup, which led to an 10-1 Edinboro run to end the game.
  • The Fighting Scots' strong defensive play has played a significant role in Edinboro winning the turnover battle. They are forcing 23.2 turnovers per game, a difference of +8.9 per game, which leads the PSAC, and ranks fourth in Division II. They also rank second in the conference in turnovers forced (23.2), blocked shots (60), blocks per game (4.6), scoring margin (+19.9), and three-point field goal percentage (34.8). 
  • Whitney Allen was an X-factor in the win over Pitt-Johnstown. The 6'1" forward set a career high in steals (4), and tied her career-best of 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds.
  • Michaela Barnes scored 15 points in the win over UPJ, shooting 5-of-10 from the field. The reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Year is averaging 15.3 points over Edinboro's last four contests.
  • Ciara Rosten posted her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. The 6'2" senior forward also blocked four shots, extending her streak of at least three blocks per game to eight. Rosten leads the PSAC with 47 blocks, 3.6 blocks per game, 9.0 defensive rpg., and is second with 9.8 rpg. She also ranks third nationally in blocks per game, and is fifth in defensive boards.
  • Jontay Walton has scored in double figures in all 13 contests this year. She leads the team with 18.8 ppg., which is fifth-best in the PSAC. Walton leads the conference with 3.0 steals per game, and is second in total assists (58) and assists per game (4.5).
 
Scouting the Lady Knights
  • Gannon is 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC West. On Monday, the Lady Knights hosted Seton Hill, marking their first home contest since November 19 against Cheyney. Seton Hill fought from a 10-point deficit in the second half, and scored a game-winning layup with :04 seconds remaining to secure a 79-78 road win.
  • The Lady Knights were picked to finish fifth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. A year ago, Gannon finished seventh at 9-19 overall and 9-13 in conference action. The Lady Knights missed the PSAC Tournament for the first time in five years, after finishing three spots behind the final two playoff spots.
  • Jim Brunelli is in his fifth season at Gannon. He has posted an 82-49 record with the Lady Knights, and has guided them to four of the last five PSAC Tournaments, with three berths in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
  • Gannon ranks 11th in the conference in points per game (65.1), and is giving up (66.5) for seventh in the PSAC. The Lady Knights are 6-3 in contests this season when the outcome is decided by 10 points or less.
  • 2016 PSAC West Second Team selection Maggie Mitchell is guiding a young Lady Knight team with 17.6 ppg. Chelsea Rourke (12.9 ppg.), has scored in double digits in ten straight matchups, while Nicole LaCava (11.0 ppg) is coming off a career-high 22 points vs. Seton Hill.
  • Lauren Tewes leads the Lady Knights on the glass, averaging 5.2 rpg. She's joined by LaCava and Rourke who are averaging over five boards on the year with 5.2 and 5.1 rebounds, respectfully.
  • Gannon has committed 46 more turnovers than their opponents this season, leading to 34 steals and a +3.4 differential in points off turnovers. The turnover difference has allowed opposing teams to attempt 105 more shots against the Lady Knights, but only 21 of those attempts have been converted.
