Edinboro Ready to Compete in PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mansfield

Corey Wefing
EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro University men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, May 9 to Saturday, May 11 at Karl Van Norman Field on the campus of Mansfield University.

Head coach Anne Cleary's squad will be represented by 11 men's competitors and eight women's student-athletes. A year ago, the men's squad posted its highest finish since 1999, coming in fourth as the Fighting Scots swept the distance events. The women's team finished tied for seventh.

The competition gets underway on Thursday with events in the decathlon and heptathlon, along with the hammer throw and 10,000-meter run. Colton Cassel enters as the favorite in the men's 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:41.98, the top time in the PSAC this year. The sophomore has an NCAA provisional mark, but will look to improve on a time that is 40th-best in Division II.

Corey Wefing owns the top time in the PSAC in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:46.84. That is good for 14th in Division II. A year ago, Wefing earned All-American honors for the first time with a ninth place finish in the event at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Wefing is the defending PSAC champion in the event, and a year ago also won his third straight championship in the 800-meter run. He comes in with the seventh-best time in the PSAC this year.

Freshman Ward Ries owns one of the top times in the PSAC in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He is seeded fourth with a time of 9:42.50. Fellow freshman Nick Amos is eighth at 10:01.46.

Trae Smith is another Fighting Scot with an NCAA provisional mark while competing in the javelin. His top throw of 59.16 meters is sixth in the PSAC and 33rd nationally. The junior finished eighth in the event a year ago after finishing third in 2017.

On the women's side, Stefanie Parsons looks to continue an outstanding track & field campaign after previously earning All-American honors in the one-mile run at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships thanks to a sixth place finish. She was named the PSAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Track Athlete of the Year after being named the 2018 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year and the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Track Athlete of the Meet.

Parsons is entered in the 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run, and owns the top time in the PSAC in both events. Her time of 4:25.91 in the 1,500 is 12th-best in Division II. She also has run an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 5,000-meter run, but she will not compete in that event.

Teammate Hope Pietrocarlo looks to run for the title in the 5,000, however, after earning All-American honors in cross country in the fall. The redshirt sophomore owns the second-best time in the PSAC in the 5,000 with a time of 17:28.25.
