MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro will wrestle twice this weekend, hosting Old Dominion in a Mid-American Conference dual on Friday, January 24 at McComb Fieldhouse, followed by a meeting old Eastern Wrestling League foe Pittsburgh on Sunday, January 26. The Fighting Scots come in with a 9-5 record and are 3-3 in the MAC. Old Dominion is 4-8 and 2-2, respectively. This will mark the first meeting between the two since the 2014-15 season when they met in the Virginia Duals. Pittsburgh has a 5-2 record and is ranked tenth in this week's NWCA Division I Top 25. The Panthers are also tenth in InterMat's dual rankings and 20th in the tournament rankings. They compete in the ACC. Edinboro and Pitt were one-time rivals in the EWL, but will meet for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign.
  • Earlier this year, the Mid-American Conference announced the addition of the seven Eastern Wrestling League members, including Edinboro, as affiliate members. The move brought the MAC to 15 teams, the second-largest wrestling conference in Division I.
  • The Fighting Scots won their first-ever MAC dual, 29-6 over Kent State, and followed that with a 25-7 win over Ohio. They would drop a 21-19 decision to George Mason on December 20, and on January 5, lost to Buffalo, 25-13. Edinboro had a pair of road MAC duals last week, edging Bloomsburg, 19-16, before dropping a 20-12 decision at Rider.
  • Head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, is in his second season in charge at his alma mater. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Kent State. Hill faced a major rebuilding project a year ago after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill's first edition finished 2-9 in duals and placed fourth at the EWL Championships.
  • Edinboro is currently ranked ninth in the MAC Coaches December Rankings. Old Dominion comes in tied for third with Lock Haven. Three Fighting Scots are ranked in the individual weight class rankings, led by Jon Spaulding. The junior is ranked second at heavyweight and comes in with a 15-5 record.  Jacob Oliver, a redshirt sophomore, is ranked third at 174 lbs. with a 15-4 ledger. Freshman Tye Varndell (13-6) is fifth at 133 lbs. Old Dominion has five wrestlers appearing the MAC rankings for January, led by Sa'Derian Perry, who is ranked first at 141 lbs. Shane Jones is ranked second at 165 lbs., while Killian Cardinale and Larry Early stand third at 125 lbs. and 157 lbs., respectively. Antonio Agee was voted sixth at 184 lbs. In addition, Early is ranked 14th nationally by InterMat, while Cardinale is ranked 20th.
  • Jon Spaulding recorded his 50th career win against Rider. The junior heavyweight has been on a roll, with four wins in a row and seven in his last eight bouts to improve to 17-4 overall and 50-31 for his career. Jacob Oliver has won his last seven matches at 174 lbs., boosting his season record to 17-4. The redshirt sophomore was named the MAC Eastern Division Wrestler of the Week after winning the championship at 174 lbs. at the Navy Classic. He was Edinboro's lone wrestler to qualify for Nationals a year ago, finishing at 28-7.
  • Lucas Rodriguez has won his last four matches at 125 lbs. after losing three in a row. The winning streak has boosted the redshirt sophomore to 14-7 on the season.
  • The upper weight classes have carried the Fighting Scots of late. In addition to Oliver and Spaulding, Cody Mulligan and Dylan Reynolds both own 14-8 records while competing at 184 and 197 lbs., respectively. Mulligan is a redshirt freshman while Reynolds is a redshirt senior.
  • Old Dominion comes into McComb Fieldhouse with a 4-8 overall record and is 2-2 in the MC. The Monarchs split a pair of matches last weekend, defeating lock Haven 28-7, before suffering a 22-10 loss to Rider. In their other MAC duals, they defeated SIU-Edwardsville, 33-9, and dropped a 24-8 decision to Missouri. ODU has a pair of wrestlers appearing in InterMat's individual rankings, with Larry Early ranked 14th at 157 lbs. and Killian Cardinale 20th at 125 lbs. Early, a redshirt senior, is a former transfer from Minnesota who earned All-American honors a year ago with an eighth place showing at Nationals. He would end the year at 25-7 and was the MAC runner-up. He is a two-time national qualifier at ODU and comes in with an 11-4 record. Sa'Derian Perry is also a two-time national qualifier at 141 lbs., earning All-American accolades with an eighth place showing in 2018. He was 24-10 a year ago and earned a trip to Nationals with a fifth place finish at the MAC Championships. He comes in at 11-7 while facing numerous nationally-ranked opponents of late.
  • Pittsburgh, ranked tenth nationally, is 5-2 following a 30-10 loss at then ninth-ranked Oklahoma State last Saturday. Prior to that the Panthers came in fourth at the Southern Scuffle. Pitt's other loss was to third-ranked Ohio State, 23-12, and the Panthers own a 29-6 victory over West Virginia. Third-year head coach Keith Gavin features a lineup that has xx yet three redshirt freshman. The lineup also showcases five nationally-ranked wrestlers, according to InterMat. Mickey Phillippi leads the way. The redshirt sophomore is ranked sixth at 133 lbs. with a 16-1 record. A former transfer from Virginia, he won the ACC championship a year ago to qualify for Nationals, ending the year at 21-4. Senior Demetrius Thomas is ranked eighth at heavyweight with a 14-3 ledger. Thomas was also a 2019 ACC champion in his first season as a Panther. He previously competed at William Baptist, where he was an NAIA national champion in 2017 and the national runner-up in 2018. Nino Bonaccorsi gives the Panthers a third top-ten wrestler, ranked ninth at 184 lbs. He has a 14-3 record after qualifying for Nationals a year ago as the ACC runner-up and going 21-8. Jake Wentzel (13-4) is ranked 11th at 165 lbs. and Gregg Harvey (11-6) is 19th at 174 lbs. Both are redshirt juniors. The Pitt lineup also has a familiar name in Cole Matthews, a redshirt freshman at 141 lbs. He is the younger brother of former Fighting Scot Austin Matthews.
