MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro will look to gain some momentum heading into its first appearance at the Mid-American Conference Championships with a pair of home duals to wrap up the regular season. The Fighting Scots snapped a four-match losing streak with a 28-18 win over Davidson on February 8. Now almost two weeks later, they return to the mat with a pair of big matches. The weekend begins with the marquee match of the year, as Michigan visits McComb Fieldhouse. This will mark the first meeting between the two since they met in the Eastern Michigan Duals during the 2014-15 season, with Edinboro prevailing, 23-16. Two days later, Edinboro will look to celebrate Senior Day against long-time rival Clarion. The Fighting Scots own a 10-8 overall record and are 3-5 in MAC competition. Michigan comes in with a 6-6 record and is 5-4 against the rugged Big Ten. The Wolverines are tied for 21st in the latest NWCA Division I Top 25. Clarion has a 9-6 overall mark and is 6-4 vs. MAC competition.
  • Following this weekend's two duals, Edinboro will prepare to compete in the Mid-American Conference Championships on March 7-8. Northern Illinois is hosting the championships in DeKalb, Ill. Earlier this year, the Mid-American Conference announced the addition of the seven Eastern Wrestling League members, including Edinboro, as affiliate members. The move brought the MAC to 15 teams, the second-largest wrestling conference in Division I.
  • The Fighting Scots won their first-ever MAC dual, 29-6 over Kent State, and followed that with a 25-7 win over Ohio.
  • Head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, is in his second season in charge at his alma mater. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Kent State. Hill faced a major rebuilding project a year ago after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill's first edition finished 2-9 in duals and placed fourth at the EWL Championships.
  • Edinboro is currently ranked seventh in the MAC Coaches Rankings, while Clarion is eighth. Three Fighting Scots are ranked in the individual weight class rankings, led by Jacob Oliver. The redshirt sophomore is ranked first at 174 lbs. with a 20-4 record. Jon Spaulding remains second at heavyweight. The junior comes in with a 23-7 record.  Freshman Tye Varndell  has a deceiving 13-11 record while facing a tough weight class, and is fifth at 133 lbs.  Clarion has five wrestlers appearing the latest MAC rankings, led by Brock Zacherl and Greg Bulsak, who are ranked second at 149 lbs. and 197 lbs., respectively. Ty Bagoly is tied for fourth at heavyweight. Zacherl is ranked 12th nationally by InterMat, while Bulsak is 13th.
  • Jacob Oliver has run his winning streak to ten matches, boosting his record to 20-4. The redshirt sophomore is not only ranked number one in the MAC poll at  174 lbs., but is making a steady climb in the national rankings. He is now ranked 14th according to InterMat and FloWrestling. In addition, he is ranked 14th in FloWrestling's rankings, 15th by TheOpenMat.com, 19th by Win Magazine, and 20th by Amateur Wrestling News.  The redshirt sophomore was named the MAC Eastern Division Wrestler of the Week after winning the championship at 174 lbs. at the Navy Classic. He was Edinboro's lone wrestler to qualify for Nationals a year ago, finishing at 28-7
  • Of even more importance is the NCAA's qualifying rankings, which will ultimately determine the 330 wrestlers to compete in the 2020 NCAA Division I National Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. on March 19-21. Edinboro has three wrestlers showing up in either the NCAA Division I Coaches Rankings or the RPI rankings. Jacob Oliver is ranked 18th at 174 lbs. in the coaches' poll, along with 20th in the RPI rankings. Jon Spaulding is ranked 27th at heavyweight in both polls. He has won 13 of his last 16 bouts to improve to 23-7 on the season. In addition, Dylan Reynolds is ranked 27th at 197 lbs. in the RPI rankings. The redshirt senior has a 17-9 record.
GOODBYE SENIORS
Edinboro will recognize five seniors before Sunday's match with Clarion as Senior Day is celebrated. The seniors include Koltyn Eason, Nate Hagan, Michael Resignalo, Dylan Reynolds, and Cullen Wolford. Reynolds has been aa three-year starter between 184 and 197 lbs. and has a 73-52 career record. Hagan has started at 141 lbs. and owns a 48-53 career ledger. Eason, Resignalo, and Wolford have all proven to be valuable reserves.

REYNOLDS, BULSAK RENEW ACQUAINTANCES
Dylan Reynolds and Clarion's Greg Bulsak will renew their rivalry on Sunday. They have three times in the last few years, with Bulsak winning two of three. A year ago, they split a pair of bouts, with Bulsak claiming a 4-0 decision in the duals, but Reynolds came back to win a 2-1 decision in the consolation semifinals of the EWL Championships. In 2017-18, Bulsak won a 6-0 decision.

YOUTH IS SERVED
Edinboro has had a pair of promising freshmen in the starting lineup throughout the year. True freshman Tye Varndell has a deceiving 13-11 record at 133 lbs. He has faced strong competition seemingly every match. Redshirt freshman Cody Mulligan was a blue chip recruit who is starting at 184 lbs. and owns a 15-11 record. Both are local products, with Varndell from Cambridge Springs High School and Mulligan from Saegertown High School.

SCOUTING THE MICHIGAN WOLVERINES
Michigan showcases a young lineup with plenty of talent. Four Wolverines show up in the InterMat rankings, and six are in the latest NCAA rankings. Head coach Sean Bormet relies on as many as four first or second-year wrestlers. Michigan, 6-6 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten action, is tied for 21st in the latest NWCA Division I Top 25, along with 20th in InterMat's latest dual rankings and 17th in the tournament rankings. The Wolverines have lost their last three duals – to Iowa (27-9), Nebraska (25-15), and Wisconsin (20-12). All are ranked in InterMat's top 11, with Iowa sitting at number one. They also lost to North Carolina (currently 7th), Oregon State, and Illinois (currently 17th). They own wins over top 25 teams Minnesota (15th) and Rutgers (25th). Mason Parris looks to challenge for a national championship at heavyweight. The sophomore has a 25-0 record and is ranked second by InterMat. Parris has won 16 matches by bonus points, including 10 falls. He comes off a 3-1 decision over fifth-ranked Trent Hillger of Wisconsin last Sunday. He recently pinned third-ranked Tony Cassioppi of Iowa. Will Lewan and Kanen Storr are also ranked in the top ten. Lewan is ranked ninth at 157 lbs. with a 17-5 record, while Storr is 13-3 at 149 lbs. and is ranked tenth. Jack Medley (15-10), meanwhile, is ranked 19th at 125 lbs. and Jelani Embree (15-10) is 20th at 184 lbs.

Clarion will bring a 9-6 overall record and 6-4 in the MAC into McComb Fieldhouse. The Golden Eagles had run off eight straight wins but have lost three of their last four duals, including a 25-13 loss at Rider this past Sunday. Their biggest win of the year likely came against another former EWL member, defeating Lock Haven, 20-16. The Golden Eagles of head coach Keith Ferraro showcase a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers in Brock Zacherl at 149 lbs. and Greg Bulsak at 197 lbs. Zacherl is a sixth-year senior who is ranked 12th by InterMat. He has battled injuries throughout his career, but has been healthy this year and comes in with a 19-3 record. Zacherl has 111 career wins. Bulsak is ranked 13th by InterMat and has a 22-5 record, leading the team in wins. He comes off an 8-1 win over nationally-ranked Ethan Laird of Rider.
